Freethought Month

October

Declaring October the Month of Freethought was inspired by the work done in Texas to commemorate the many German Freethinkers that emigrated to this area, and several others across the US, during the 19th Century. From 1845 to 1861, large numbers of Freethinkers from Germany settled in the Texas hill country, founding several communities that were often without churches and other influences of organized religion. Modern-day freethinkers in Texas, celebrate this heritage by organizing Freethought Festivals and they have also worked very hard to erect a permanent cenotaph commemorating the German settlers of yesteryear. To read more about their efforts visit here.

Beginning on October 12, Freethought Month begins with a Coming Out Day for Freethinkers. A variety of events and activities follow that can take place throughout the month.

We will soon be adding activity suggestions and resources for the Freethought Month of October.
